Spudnik: Potato dressed as Santa with a camera attached is sent to edge of space by schoolchildren

He's more used to coming down the chimney.

But Father Christmas has been going up in the world – launched into space thanks to the ingenuity of a group of primary school children.

Admittedly, he was in the guise of a potato, after the pupils at Landscove CofE Primary School, near Ashburton, Devon, dressed their ‘pilot’ with a white beard and red bobble hat before positioning him into his ‘shuttle’ – made of a two-litre plastic drink bottle.

Spacechip: A potato dressed as a Santa is seen against the curvature of the earth after it was launched into space by school children from Devon

Named Spudnik2 – in homage to Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957 – the ‘spacechip’ was then tied to a helium weather balloon with a camera attached and launched from the village car park.

The children, aged between seven and ten, watched as it soared 17 miles up – reaching 90,000ft – before the balloon burst and the shuttle floated back down to Earth on a parachute, landing 140 miles away in Hampshire.

Spudnik2 was located due to its GPS tracking system and the teachers and pupils were delighted to discover the camera had captured stunning images from space.

Headmaster Robin Smith admitted it was a ‘mad idea’ but was also a way of teaching youngsters – who designed several ‘pilots’ – about space and the Earth’s atmosphere.

He said: ‘The kids love doing things that are unusual, so if you tell them they will be launching a potato into space you really engage their interest.

‘It may seem like a mad idea, but it was a unique project and the children really learned a lot from the experience. It was ridiculous but really good fun.’

The potato was in flight for a total of two hours and 20 minutes.

It came back down to Earth on a parachute and – fittingly – landed in a Christmas tree plantation near Basingstoke.

A photo montage made from several exposures shows the view as Spudnik reached the edge of the Stratosphere

Teacher Hilary Gibbard said: ‘Throughout the flight, the camera was working and taking pictures.

‘The images we found were just amazing – literally out of this world.’

News of their space mission comes only a week after three Britons launched a paper plane into space from a launch site near Madrid.
